Shaheed Al Hafed (Refugee Camps), July 20, 2010 (SPS) - The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Western Sahara, Mr. Hany Abdul Aziz, conveyed Tuesday his preoccupation regarding human rights situation in Western Sahara, and that of the United Nations on this subject, despite the obstacles that prevent the MINURSO assuming monitoring and protection of human rights.

Mr. Hany Abdul Aziz said although the United Nations Mission has not yet charged with monitoring and protection of human rights, it is closely following the situation and informed about the reports and statements on the subject of human rights in Western Sahara, both by Sahrawi party or international organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.

The Special Representative, alongside an important delegation of MINURSO, arrived Tuesday morning at the headquarters of the Association of families of Sahrawi prisoners and missing persons (AFAPREDESA), , where he met members of the Assembly, to listen to their views on the human rights situation in Western Sahara.
